Joaquin Cuesta Castro

"INNER SEEING"

A never before seen body of work, based on looking at oneself as one is, rather than what one should be, will be exhibited by artist Joaquin Cuesta Castro.  The work includes paintings, drawings, and sculptures.  The two week exhibit opens in the Tower District at Studio 74, 1274 N. Van Ness Avenue, Fresno, California, Art Hop Thursday, August 6, 2009, and runs through August 22.  The artist’s reception is August 15, from 1:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M.  Various sizes of works will be displayed.

Known in the art community as disinclined to exhibit his work, Cuesta-Castro says his discerning friend, Heinz Küsel, once told him not to exhibit any art work until completing 100 pieces.  Cuesta-Castro immediately set his course.  Fortunately, on his way he discovered oil pastels, closely related to oil painting, and later found drawing, more recently, sculpture and mural painting.

What I learned through my intuitive friend, says Cuesta-Castro, is that when we think we know, beware!  Knowledge is based in the past.  Learning can only happen in the present, and requires a quality of attention that can be transformational.  When that attention presents itself without the individual seeking it, the human baggage of knowledge, experience, and conditioning lightens up.  Inner Seeing” deals with issues of freedom, fear, desire, violence, authority, happiness, and love.  By using experiment as the fundamental process, the artist approaches these subjects with creative intuition and unexpected expectancy.
